Some days, it just pays off to remember to grab the camera as you walk out the door to run errands. This was one of those days. I managed to snap photos of 3 new birds to add to the bird gallery.
The American Coot (above and below) is one of the strangest birds I’ve run across. Giant feet, stubby wings, reddish eyes, walks like a chicken, and dives likes a duck.
The American Coot is a reminder that not everything that swims on the water is a duck. Also, it’s a good thing they’re small (15-16 inches in length), because I find them vaguely terrifying, especially when they’re running toward you expecting food. The water fowl at Carrie Blake Park here in Sequim are obviously well-fed!
These Gadwall ducks are well-camouflaged in the pond at Carrie Blake park.
Had to pull over and snap a photo when I spotted this red-tailed hawk sitting on some wire, probably scouting for food as it overlooks a freshly plowed field.
A sharp-shinned hawk perched on a bare branch was worth the 30 or so photos I snapped of it.
